This video shows how internal and external factors could affect helping behavior. Because it was a very hot day out, most people felt very uncomfortable with the baby alone in the car. If the situation was different and it was not so hot out, maybe some may not have been so worried. Leaving a baby alone in a car at any time is still very dangerous and is not encouraged, but most know that the baby could die if left in a hot car and so that makes the situation much more serious.
We see people react differently to the situation based on their internal attributes. The first woman who is a mother could not possibly walk past the car and not help. Her identity as a mother made her much more sensitive to the situation. When she was questioned as to why she stepped in, she answered, "How could I not get involved?" She also got very emotional, showing that she is most likely a caring person. The young girl who showed concern but did not do anything did not know what to do in the situation. It seems that she wanted to help but did not because it was not her car. The position she took is very different from the mother who immediately took actions. The man who called the police immediately showed a reaction and called the police. When the woman came back, he expressed anger towards her and tells her she should be shot. When confronted the woman that was with him said he feels strongly about certain issues. The final scene, with three people shows another aggressive reaction. After calling the police, the two women confront her and continue to tell her that her actions are wrong and that she should not have a child. One of the woman tells that she has three children and grandchildren as an explanation for why she got involved the way she did. She too says, "I couldn't just walk away." The man that had called police in the same scene says he intervenes because he thought, "What if it had been my kid," as well as saying he would definitely intervene again because it is a life. This video shows how different people respond different situations. Multiple women had said they were mothers and that was reason to stop and intervene. Others just stopped because it was the right thing to do and they could not walk away without doing anything. Their reactions to seeing the mothers also shows differences in their personalities. Then first woman was very emotional when talking about it and did not become aggressive with the mother. The first male to help expressed his anger towards her by saying she should be shot. The second set of women aggressively confronted her and told her she should not have a baby. The different reactions of different people shows their differed internal traits. This situation is an example of how individuals differ in helping. People are all different and some cannot just stand by and not react. In addition to different personality traits, many other factors go into why someone might help. Including situations, emotions, personality traits and just things that go through our minds. |
